The Dangers of Distracted Driving

from fcc.gov

The popularity of mobile devices has had unintended and deadly consequences.  Because of this, an alarming number of traffic accidents can be linked to driving while distracted.  The dangers of distracted driving are real.  As a result, these dangers may result in injury and death.

Check out some statistics:

  • Over 8 people are killed and 1,161 are injured daily in incidents reported due to distracted driving.
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported there were 3,477 people killed in 2015.  An additional additional 391,000 people were injured because of distracted driving.
  • At any given daylight moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices as the drive.  This number has held steady since 2010.
  • In 2015, the National Occupant Protection Use Survey reported that handheld cell phone use continued to be highest among 16-24 year old drivers.

What you can do to help

Give clear instructions – Give new drivers simple, clear instructions not to use their wireless devices as they drive. Before new drivers get their licenses, discuss the facts. Even taking your eyes off the road for a moment could cost someone injury or even death.

Lead by example –Don’t text and drive. Be an example for others. Pull over if you need to text or talk on the phone.  Set rules for yourself regarding distracted driving.

Become informed and be active –Tell your family, friends and organizations about the importance of driving free of distractions. Take information to your kids’ schools. Ask that it be shared with students and parents.

Miami’s Red Light Camera Tickets Comes to a Screeching Halt

No More Red Light Camera Tickets

No more red light camera tickets!  In a landmark move,  “Miami city officials have decided to take down the city’s red light cameras. A Miami Herald report says city commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to cancel their contract with American Traffic Solutions for dozens of traffic cameras that have been used to issue red-light violations,” per the Miami Herald.  So, again, no more red light camera tickets!

Consider this an early holiday gift as this will undoubtedly save you money into the new year.

Prior to this, drivers who were recorded by the red light cameras had to pay a fee of $158.  The company manufacturing the red light cameras has 60 days to end the program.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving Tips

This year has seen significant growth here at the Traffic Ticket Office. Although this is traditionally the time of year when people pause and give thanks, please know that we give thanks every single day for the privilege to be of service to each one of you.

As you prepare for your Thanksgiving feast tomorrow, we thank you for your continued support throughout the year and your friend and family referrals.

From all of us at the Traffic Ticket Office, we wish you a very happy Thanksgiving.

For a stress-free Thanksgiving feast together, please have a look at these tips:

1. Start a new tradition

While many families go around the table sharing what they are thankful for, take it one step further by using a white tablecloth and passing out Sharpie markers.  All guests write down what they are thankful for that year, sign and date it.  Use the same tablecloth each year as a timeline for your family and friends.

2. Ask for help

Don’t do it all yourself!  Encourage guests to bring a dish and/or help with meal prep and cleanup.  Most people will be happy to assist, and it’s a great time for informal conversation.

3. Don’t talk politics

Use the family meal time to reconnect with one another’s lives.  Talk about sports, school, work – but steer clear of controversial topics, especially politics.  You can even make a family pact to agree to disagree ahead of time.

Veterans Day Thank You

Veterans Day Thank You

Thank a United States Veteran

Every day, but especially on this Veteran’s Day, we take the time to thank veterans for their service to the United States.  It is because of their sacrifice that citizens like you and me enjoy the freedoms we experience daily.

Thank you, United States Veterans,  for your service!

The History of Veterans Day

The History of Veterans DayVeterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

Halloween safety tips

Halloween safety tips

Halloween is this coming Tuesday.  Are you prepared?

Here are some Halloween safety tips to keep in mind as you’re out trick or treating with your kids.  Make sure to follow these to ensure a safe holiday.

reprinted from Improvements.com

10 Trick or Treat Safety Tips:

  1. Go During Safe Trick Or Treat Times
You don’t have to wait until it is pitch-black outside to go trick-or-treating. A good trick or treat time is right after an early dinner and just before dusk when you can keep better track of your children and you are able to see the others that you encounter on the street. Besides, if you are the first person there, you will have the best selection of candy!
  2. Steer Clear Of Masks
While masks are a fun part of many costumes, do your best to recreate the mask with face paint. Having a mask on can sometimes impair the vision of the child wearing it.
  3. Be Visible
If your kids will comply, choose costumes that are brightly colored so that they are easier to see in the dark. If they really want a dark costume, apply some reflective strips to their costume. You could also have them wear glow necklaces or carry glow sticks and flashlights.
  4. Never Go Alone
It is important that your children have an adult chaperon at all times while trick or treating. You should also discreetly add some emergency identification information such as the child’s name, address & phone number to their costume or on a bracelet in case your child happens to get separated from the group.
  5. Walking Tips
Be sure that your children understand simple traffic rules, such as stopping and looking both ways before crossing the street, and staying in a crosswalk if one is available. If you have to cross at a light, make sure you have the proper “walk” signal before you proceed. Inform your children that they should never assume that they have the right away when crossing the street, especially at night on Halloween.
  6. Knock On Doors That You Know
Encourage your children to only trick-or-treat at homes where they know the inhabitants. If they know everyone on the street, except for one house, they could ask the neighbors about that one house. If a home is dark or has no Halloween decorations, that is typically a good sign that they are not up for trick-or-treaters.
  7. Don’t Go Inside
Trick-or-treaters always seem to run across a house or two where someone invites them to “come in”. Remind your little ones that they should never go inside anybody’s home while trick-or-treating. They can easily get the candy they seek from the porch or if the homeowner is persistent, inform them to simply turn and walk away.
  8. Stay On Track
It might be tempting to take a short cut through an alley or cut through someone’s yard, but that can sometimes pose a danger. Stay on streets and in neighborhoods that are well lit and where there are plenty of people around.
  9. Say No!
If you’re children are old enough to trick or treat in a group without you, be sure and designate a time for their return. Teach your children that if a stranger offers to give them a ride or take them to a Halloween Party, they should say “no”.
  10. Taste-Testing Patience   Trick or treating is for gathering candy, not eating it as they receive it. Pack a goody bag with some of your own Halloween candy so your kids have something to snack on if they just can’t wait until they get home.

Don't Pay That Ticket!

Don’t Pay That Ticket!

Don’t Pay That Ticket!

Don’t pay that ticket! The attorneys at the Traffic Ticket Office counsel you to never pay any type of traffic violation or citation issued to you.  Just, Don’t Pay That Ticket!

Why?

It’s simple….your paying that ticket is an admission of guilt. An admission of guilt implies you are guilty of said violation.   In this case, not only are you subject to having to pay a hefty ticket or violation cost, but perhaps even worse, your insurance rate will increase as points will be assessed to your driver’s record. This consequence could add 7 years of much costlier insurance rates to your good record.

Friday the 13th History

Friday the 13th History

reprinted from History.com

The History of Friday the 13th

Long considered a harbinger of bad luck, Friday the 13th has inspired a late 19th-century secret society, an early 20th-century novel, and a horror film franchise.   Additionally, it has inspired not one, but two unwieldy terms—paraskavedekatriaphobia and friggatriskaidekaphobia—that describe fear of this supposedly unlucky day.

Just like walking under a ladder, crossing paths with a black cat or breaking a mirror, many people hold fast to the belief that Friday the 13th brings bad luck. Though it’s uncertain exactly when this particular tradition began, negative superstitions have swirled around the number 13 for centuries.

While Western cultures have historically associated the number 12 with completeness (there are 12 days of Christmas, 12 months and zodiac signs, 12 labors of Hercules, 12 gods of Olympus and 12 tribes of Israel, just to name a few examples), its successor 13 has a long history as a sign of bad luck.

The ancient Code of Hammurabi, for example, reportedly omitted a 13th law from its list of legal rules. Though this was probably a clerical error, superstitious people sometimes point to this as proof of 13’s longstanding negative associations.

Fear of the number 13 has even earned a psychological term: triskaidekaphobia.

According to biblical tradition, 13 guests attended the Last Supper, held on Maundy Thursday, including Jesus and his 12 apostles (one of whom, Judas, betrayed him). The next day, of course, was Good Friday, the day of Jesus’ crucifixion.

The seating arrangement at the Last Supper is believed to have given rise to a longstanding Christian superstition that having 13 guests at a table was a bad omen—specifically, that it was courting death.

Though Friday’s negative associations are weaker, some have suggested they also have roots in Christian tradition: Just as Jesus was crucified on a Friday, Friday was also said to be the day Eve gave Adam the fateful apple from the Tree of Knowledge, as well as the day Cain killed his brother, Abel.

An important milestone in the history of the Friday the 13th legend in particular (not just the number 13) occurred in 1907, with the publication of the novel Friday, the Thirteenth written by Thomas William Lawson.

The book told the story of a New York City stockbroker who plays on superstitions about the date to create chaos on Wall Street, and make a killing on the market.

The horror movie Friday the 13th, released in 1980, introduced the world to a hockey mask-wearing killer named Jason, and is perhaps the best-known example of the famous superstition in pop culture history. The movie spawned multiple sequels, as well as comic books, novellas, video games, related merchandise and countless terrifying Halloween costumes.

In more recent times, a number of traumatic events have occurred on Friday the 13th, including the German bombing of Buckingham Palace (September 1940); the murder of Kitty Genovese in Queens, New York (March 1964); a cyclone that killed more than 300,000 people in Bangladesh (November 1970); the disappearance of a Chilean Air Force plane in the Andes (October 1972); the death of rapper Tupac Shakur (September 1996) and the crash of the Costa Concordia cruise ship off the coast of Italy, which killed 30 people (January 2012).
